Paint Preparation

Good paint work starts before the first coat goes on. We supply the access, washing and sanding equipment that helps crews prep walls, steel, ceilings and exterior surfaces properly in coastal conditions.

When surfaces need more than a quick wipe-down

Paint prep jobs come up on homes, shops, schools, warehouses and body corporate work where the old finish is tired, chalky, dusty or full of coastal grime. In East London and along the coast, salt, damp air and wind-blown dirt can leave surfaces in poor shape even when they look sound from a distance. If you skip prep, the coating can peel, blister or flash through too fast, and that means extra labour later.

For repainting, patch repairs and waterproofing touch-ups, the goal is simple: get the surface clean, sound and dry before any primer or topcoat is opened. Our hire support suits painters, maintenance teams, builders and property owners who need practical access and cleaning tools for a day, a weekend or a longer contract. We can also help with site delivery if the work is in Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce or Port Alfred.

Typical equipment for paint prep jobs

The right kit depends on the surface and how high or awkward the area is. For low level prep, teams often need pressure washing, sanding and dust control. For fascias, stairwells, warehouse steel or double-volume walls, safe access becomes just as important as the cleaning itself.

  • Pressure washers for loose dirt, salt build-up and mildew on exterior walls
  • Sanders and abrasive gear for scuffing old paint and removing rough patches
  • Scaffolding for stable access to high walls, eaves and ceilings
  • Generators for sites where power is limited or load-shedding is in the middle of the job
  • Pumps for wash-down, water transfer or areas that hold water after rain
  • Barrier and layout items for keeping walkways clear during prep work

We can also arrange equipment collection if the crew wants to pick up from our Beacon Bay base. If the job is bigger, delivery and on-site setup saves time and helps keep the sequence right, especially when the painters are coming straight after the prep team.

Planning the layout before the first wall is touched

A paint prep site works better when the team plans the flow first. The washing point, sanding area, waste handling and access equipment should all fit together, otherwise crews end up moving ladders, hoses and tools around the whole site. That slows the job and increases the chance of damage to finished surfaces.

On coastal jobs we usually recommend checking water supply, drainage and drying time before confirming the hire list. If the site is in a windy area such as Kidds Beach or near the open coast, it helps to schedule washing early enough so the surface can dry properly before primer. For multi-storey blocks or commercial units, scaffold planning should be done before the day starts, not after the first ladder wobble.

  • Measure wall heights and note where the ground is uneven or soft
  • Confirm power availability for sanders, pumps or washers
  • Keep a clear path for hoses, cords and moving materials
  • Set one area for cleaned tools so dirt is not brought back onto fresh prep
  • Allow drying time, especially after washing or after humid nights

Common mistakes that cost time and paint

The biggest mistake is assuming the old surface is ready because it looks fine from a few metres away. Loose paint, powdery dust and mould can hide in corners, around window reveals and under eaves. Another common issue is using the wrong abrasive grade, which leaves scratches that show through the final finish.

We also see crews under-hire access equipment and then try to stretch ladders too far or move them too often. That slows the work and can be unsafe. In some cases people rent a washer but forget the drainage plan, so dirty water runs across a cleaned section and the team has to start again. Small planning errors like that add up fast.

On load-shedding days, the mistake is assuming the power will be there when needed. If the prep team must keep moving, a generator can keep the washer or sander going and help the day stay on track. For sites with limited water pressure, a pump can make a proper difference too.

What paint prep hire usually costs

Budgets vary by surface area, height, hire duration and whether the job needs delivery or setup. For small prep work, a basic sanding and washing package may sit in the lower hundreds of Rand for a day. A scaffold or access package for a house front or shopfront will cost more, while a full commercial prep setup with generator support, pumps and longer hire can move into the several thousands.

As a guide, many small maintenance jobs land between R350 and R1,200 for the day on individual items, while larger combined hires can range from about R1,500 to R6,500 or more depending on what is needed. Weekend hire and long-term hire can be more affordable per day, and emergency callout support is priced differently again. The quickest way to keep budget under control is to list the surface type, height, water access and expected finish date before the quote is done.

Why teams across the coast call us first

Paint prep is one of those jobs where timing matters as much as equipment. A builder in Qonce may need access gear for a school block, while a maintenance crew in Gonubie may need washing and sanding tools for a weathered boundary wall before a tenant moves in. Our team understands local site conditions, from coastal humidity to tight driveways and busy commercial yards.

We can help with site delivery, equipment collection, on-site setup, fuel management, weekend hire and long-term hire. If you are not sure how much kit to book, speak to us before the job starts and we will help match the equipment to the surface, the height and the time available. A bit of planning up front saves a lot of rework later.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

What equipment do I need for basic paint preparation?

Most basic prep jobs need a pressure washer or wash-down method, sanding gear, and safe access if the surface is above ground level. If the site has no power, a generator may also be needed.

Do you help with scaffold planning for paint prep work?

Yes. For higher walls, ceilings and awkward exterior areas we can help with scaffold planning, delivery and on-site setup so the crew can work safely and keep the prep sequence moving.

Can you supply paint prep hire for weekend work or urgent callouts?

Yes. We offer weekend hire, long-term hire and emergency callout support for paint prep jobs across East London, Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce and Port Alfred.
