Our history

Coastline Hire started in 2008 with a practical focus: keep sites moving and events supplied along the Eastern Cape coast. From Beacon Bay to Port Alfred, the business has grown by listening to builders, event teams and property owners who need gear that arrives on time and works in coastal conditions.

2008: A Coastal Hire Yard Opens In Beacon Bay

Coastline Hire began in Beacon Bay in 2008 with a small but useful range of tools and plant for the local market. The work was shaped by the coast from the start, with salt air, sudden rain and long supply runs to sites in East London, Gonubie and Kidds Beach all part of the normal day.

The early focus was simple. Builders needed machines that could be collected quickly or delivered to site, and event organisers needed dependable equipment for functions that could not afford a late start. From the first year, the business built its name on showing up when promised and giving practical advice before anything went out the gate.

2010 To 2013: More Machines, More Callouts

As the Eastern Cape coast kept growing, the hire range had to grow with it. Between 2010 and 2013, generators, compactors, pumps and scaffolding became a bigger part of the fleet, because local projects were no longer limited to one type of job. Small renovations in Beacon Bay, drain work near low lying areas and site preparation in Qonce all called for different kit on different days.

  • Generators were added for load-shedding and remote sites.
  • Compactors helped with paving, prep work and trench backfill.
  • Pumps became important for stormwater, cellar and pit water removal.
  • Scaffolding support grew as contractors needed safer access on varied builds.

This was also the period when emergency callout support started to matter more. When weather changed, a pump failed, or a generator needed replacement after hours, customers wanted someone local who could respond without delay.

2014 To 2017: Events Hire Joins The Core Business

By 2014 the business was serving more than builders. Local schools, churches, private hosts and event coordinators across East London and Port Alfred began asking for hire items that could handle outdoor gatherings and long weekends. That opened the door for a stronger events side to the company, with Megan Petersen later taking the lead on that part of the work.

The shift meant more attention to layout, delivery timing and collection plans. Party equipment had to arrive clean, be set out properly and collected without disturbing the venue after the function. It sounds basic, but that is where a hire company proves itself, especially when a venue has limited access or a tight turnaround. An organised handover saved time for everyone and kept repeat customers coming back.

  • On-site setup became part of the service for larger events.
  • Event layout help was added for venues with limited space.
  • Weekend hire made it easier to support weddings, school functions and family gatherings.
  • Fuel management for generators helped clients avoid last minute problems.

2018 To 2020: A Stronger Team And Tighter Operations

As the fleet and customer base expanded, the business needed clearer systems behind the scenes. In this period Siyabonga Mhlabeni continued to guide the company as Managing Director, with Annelise van der Merwe strengthening operations and Luyanda Gqoba taking on fleet coordination. Themba Ndlovu brought workshop discipline to maintenance and repairs, while Nokuthula Dlamini helped customers with bookings, questions and follow ups.

This was the stage where the business became more structured without losing the hands on feel that customers expected. Equipment checks became more regular, collections were planned better, and there was more attention to pre-hire briefing so customers knew how to use the kit safely. For scaffold planning, that advice mattered a lot because each site had its own height, access and ground conditions.

Coastal weather also stayed part of the planning. Humidity, wind and salt exposure can wear equipment down faster than inland conditions, so preventative maintenance became a daily habit not a once off job.

2021 To 2023: Working Through Demand, Delays And Load-Shedding

The years that followed brought heavier demand for reliable hire support. Businesses, contractors and households all needed backup options when power supply was uncertain or jobs could not wait for a new delivery date. Generators became a familiar request, but customers also needed honest advice on size, fuel use and runtime so they could match the machine to the actual load.

At the same time, more work came from the wider catchment around East London, Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce and Port Alfred. That meant the service side had to stay sharp. Site delivery, equipment collection and emergency callout support were no longer extras, they were part of how the company stayed useful to the region. Customers wanted a supplier that could keep the day moving when the unexpected happened, and that is where Coastline Hire earned trust.

The workshop team also kept improving the condition of returned equipment, so the next customer received gear that was ready for work. A machine that comes back dirty is one thing, a machine that goes out unserviced is another.

Today: A Local Hire Partner For Coast And Inland Jobs

Today Coastline Hire continues from the same Beacon Bay base, with a broader fleet and a clearer service promise than in the early years. The company still serves builders, contractors, event teams and property owners, but now with more depth across generators, compactors, scaffolding, pumps and party equipment. Long-term hire is available for projects that run over weeks or months, while short-term hire suits urgent jobs and weekend events.

The business history is really a story of staying local while adapting to the way the coast works. Some customers need pre-hire briefing before a small domestic job, others need scaffold planning for a larger build, and some simply need a quick backup machine delivered before lunch. That mix of needs has shaped the company more than any single milestone.

  • East London and Beacon Bay remain the core service area.
  • Gonubie and Kidds Beach are regular delivery routes.
  • Qonce and Port Alfred are covered for projects and events that need planned hire support.
  • Customers can ask for delivery, collection, setup and fuel management where needed.

From the original business years on this domain to the present day, Coastline Hire has stayed practical, local and ready for work. It is still about getting the right equipment to the right place, on time, with less fuss and more certainty.
