Poker Vibrator

A poker vibrator helps remove air pockets from fresh concrete so slabs, beams and columns settle properly. Coastline Hire supplies concrete consolidation equipment across East London and the Eastern Cape coast, with delivery, setup and support for builders and contractors.

What a poker vibrator does on site

A poker vibrator is used straight after placing fresh concrete. The vibrating poker head is inserted into the wet mix to help release trapped air, close up voids and let the concrete flow around rebar, corners and congested formwork. On a slab, beam or column, this means a tighter finish and fewer honeycombs after stripping. It also helps the mix settle under its own weight, which is why it is used on most structural pours where finish and strength matter.

For coastal work around East London, Gonubie and Kidds Beach, this matters even more because damp air, windy pours and rushed placing can leave a weak surface if the concrete is not compacted properly. We supply units for small site jobs and larger pours, with practical advice on how long to vibrate each area so you do not overwork the mix or leave it under consolidated.

Sizes and options we supply

Different pours call for different poker sizes and drive units. A small poker is useful for thinner slab sections and light reinforcement, while larger heads suit heavier beams, footing work and dense rebar cages. You can hire a unit for short-term use, weekend hire or longer running work on a build programme.

  • 25 mm head for narrow pours and tight reinforcement
  • 35 mm head for general slab and beam work
  • 45 mm head for larger sections and deeper pours
  • Petrol drive unit for sites without reliable power
  • Electric drive unit for indoor work or where power is available

If you are working in a municipal area with noise limits or tight access, tell us upfront. We can match the machine to the site so you are not bringing more equipment than you need. For small teams, one drive unit with the correct poker hose is often enough for the whole pour.

Where it suits best on the Eastern Cape coast

Poker vibrators are used on foundation work, retaining walls, columns, suspended slabs, stair landings and small bridge or culvert jobs. They are also useful on precast and repair work where fresh concrete must flow into a mould without leaving pockets behind. If the concrete has to wrap around starter bars, anchor bolts or closely spaced steel, the poker is one of the main tools on site.

  • House slabs and garage floors
  • Commercial beams and columns
  • Boundary walls and retaining walls
  • Seawall and coastal repair pours
  • Driveways, ramps and small paving bases

On coastal jobs, the challenge is often access and timing. If the truck is delayed, the team still needs to place and compact within the working time of the mix. We can arrange site delivery in East London, Beacon Bay, Qonce and Port Alfred, and we know the routes that suit early starts when traffic and weather can slow a pour.

Power needs, setup and safe use

Before hiring, check whether your site has stable electricity or whether a petrol unit is better. Electric poker vibrators need a suitable power source and a safe cable run. Petrol units are better for sites with load-shedding, new builds without power, or work where cords would be a trip hazard. In both cases, the operator needs to keep the poker moving slowly through the concrete, then withdraw it carefully to avoid leaving channels behind.

We can provide on-site setup and a short pre-hire briefing so your crew knows the correct way to use the machine. That helps with safety, finish and equipment life. If the site is awkward, for example on a narrow street in Beacon Bay or a windy coastal plot in Gonubie, we will talk through where the unit should stand, how the leads or hose should be routed, and what backup plan to use if the power drops.

Care, servicing and what keeps the machine working

Concrete is hard on equipment. If the poker head is left dirty or the drive unit is stored wet, it will wear out faster and fail when you need it most. After each use, the poker head should be cleaned off while the mix is still fresh, and the hose or shaft checked for kinks, cuts or loose fittings. Petrol units need the normal fuel, oil and air filter checks, while electric units should be kept dry and protected from damaged leads.

We service hire equipment in our workshop at Beacon Bay and inspect it before it goes out again. That means less downtime for your crew and fewer surprise problems on site. If you notice unusual vibration, a slow start, or a poker that is not moving freely, stop and let us know rather than pushing on with a damaged unit. A small fault can turn into a bigger one very quickly.

What to check before you place the order

Getting the right poker vibrator is mostly about matching the machine to the pour. Tell us the size of the job, the thickness of the concrete, how much reinforcement is in the work and whether the site has power. If you are unsure, send us the slab size or the drawing and we can guide the choice. For bigger contracts, we also help with equipment planning so the machine is available when the concrete arrives.

  • Pour type: slab, beam, column, footing or wall
  • Concrete thickness and reinforcement density
  • Electric power on site or petrol preferred
  • Hire period: day, weekend, long-term or emergency callout
  • Delivery point and access for loading or off-loading

We cover East London, Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce and Port Alfred, with collection available if your team is moving between sites. If the pour is urgent, call early so we can check stock and get the right unit ready. For builders working around load-shedding, we can also talk through fuel use and backup options before the job starts.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

How do I know which poker size to hire?

Smaller heads suit thin slabs and tight steel, while larger heads work better on deeper pours and heavier reinforcement. If you send the slab thickness or drawing, we can advise the right size.

Can I use a poker vibrator during load-shedding?

Yes, but petrol drive units are better when power is unreliable. If you only have electric available, plan around your supply and have backup ready before the pour starts.

Do you help with delivery and setup?

Yes, we offer site delivery, equipment collection, on-site setup and a pre-hire briefing. We also help with planning for awkward access, long pours and coastal conditions.
