Mobile Cold Room

Need chilled storage on site for drinks, food or flowers? Our mobile cold rooms give you a clean, lockable cold space for events, trading peaks and short notice storage along the Eastern Cape coast.

What a mobile cold room does on site

A mobile cold room is a towable or trailer mounted chilled unit that keeps stock at a steady low temperature while you work. It is used for weddings, festivals, school functions, pop-up trading, butcheries, florists and busy hospitality periods when the normal fridge space runs out. In East London and along the coast, it is also handy when heat and humidity make holding stock more difficult than inland.

These units are set up close to the serving point or prep area so staff can move product in and out quickly. You keep drinks cold, food safe and flowers in better condition without filling up every spare fridge in the kitchen. For events, that means fewer ice runs and less spoilage. For traders, it means you can hold more stock during weekends, month-end rushes or public holiday peaks.

Mobile cold rooms are meant for practical use, not fancy display. They give you a controlled storage space with simple access, good insulation and enough room to organise crates, trays and cartons properly.

Sizes and cold room options available

We supply mobile cold rooms in a few common sizes so you can match the unit to the size of your function or trading volume. The exact layout may differ, but the usual options are built around easy loading, stable cooling and simple access from a single door or rear hatch.

  • Small unit: suitable for drinks, flowers or backup storage at smaller functions. Typical internal size around 2.4 m x 1.5 m x 2.0 m.
  • Medium unit: a good all-round size for caterers and medium events. Typical internal size around 3.0 m x 2.0 m x 2.1 m.
  • Large unit: for bigger guest counts, event bars or retail peaks. Typical internal size around 4.2 m x 2.0 m x 2.1 m.
  • Temperature range: usually set for chilled holding between 0 C and 5 C.
  • Floor rating: suitable for crates, tubs and sealed cartons, with non-slip insulated flooring.

If you are unsure which size fits your load, tell us what you are storing and how long it needs to stay chilled. A cold room packed too tightly does not cool evenly, so a bit of planning helps.

Where mobile cold rooms work best

These units suit places where stock has to stay cold, but you do not want to rely on a building fridge or a make-shift ice solution. They are commonly used at private functions, community events, sports days, weddings, markets and retail overflow storage. They also suit builders who are running site canteens or short-term catering on a project.

Across East London, Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce and Port Alfred, a mobile cold room is useful when the venue is far from permanent kitchen space, or when the event area changes through the day. Coastal weather can be warm and damp, so keeping chilled stock in one controlled unit reduces spoilage and keeps service moving.

They are also a good option when local bylaws or venue rules limit the use of extra freezers, extension fridges or open ice bins. One closed, lockable cold room is easier to manage than five scattered coolers.

  • Functions with drinks service and plated catering
  • Florists needing flower care in hot weather
  • Seasonal trade peaks for food outlets and bottle stores
  • Markets and outdoor stalls with limited indoor space
  • Backup storage during fridge breakdowns or power cuts

Installation, power and site access

We deliver the unit and place it where it can be used safely, with enough access for loading and good drainage around the base. If the site is soft, tight or uneven, let us know in advance so we can advise on the best position. A level spot always works best. On some event sites there may also be fencing, steps or narrow gates to plan around.

Most mobile cold rooms run on standard single-phase electrical supply, usually 220 V to 240 V, with a dedicated plug point. Depending on size and ambient conditions, power draw can differ, so it is important not to share the supply with other heavy equipment. If the venue has load-shedding or unstable power, ask about backup arrangements and generator matching. A unit can be sitting there looking fine, but if the supply dips it will not hold temperature as it should.

We can assist with site placement, setup and a pre-hire briefing so your team understands loading, door use and basic temperature checks. For events in open ground, make sure the unit has protection from direct sun where possible, plus a clear path for trolleys or crates. Keep doors closed as much as practical to reduce warm air entering the box.

Care, servicing and temperature control

Cold rooms work best when the load is organised and the door is handled properly. Pack stock with space for air movement and do not block the evaporator area. Warm product should be cooled before loading where possible, because a unit is for holding cold stock, not blasting down a hot load from scratch.

Before each hire, the unit is checked, cleaned and tested. Ongoing servicing covers seals, hinges, control settings, electrics and the refrigeration system so the unit stays safe and reliable. In coastal conditions, salt air and humidity can be hard on equipment, so regular maintenance matters even more. A clean, well sealed cold room uses less power and holds temp better through the day.

  • Keep the floor clean and dry to avoid slips and odours
  • Do not prop the door open longer than needed
  • Leave space between cartons for airflow
  • Check temperature at regular intervals during busy service
  • Report any unusual noise, icing or warm spots straight away

What to check before you book

When ordering a mobile cold room, the main thing is matching the unit to your stock and site conditions. Tell us what you are storing, how many people you are serving and how long the hire will run. That lets us advise on size, temperature range and delivery timing. If your event runs late into the weekend or your shop needs a longer hold period, we can plan for that too.

It also helps to know if the unit must sit inside a fenced area, next to a kitchen tent, or on a public site with limited access. We will ask about power availability, driveway width, ground surface and whether you need weekend hire or emergency callout. If flowers are included, mention that as well because some stock needs a little extra care and not every cold room is packed the same way.

  • What will be stored and how much of it
  • How long the hire is needed for
  • Site address and access details
  • Power source available on site
  • Any delivery time limits or venue rules

If you are not sure, send the basics and we will help you work it out. It is better to ask before delivery than to find out at setup that the space is too tight or the supply is not right.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can the mobile cold room run during load-shedding?

Only if you have a suitable backup power plan. Tell us what supply you have on site and we can advise on the best setup for your unit and load.

Do you deliver and set up the unit?

Yes. We offer delivery, positioning and setup, plus pre-hire briefing if your team needs help with loading and basic use.

Is the unit suitable for flowers as well as food?

Yes, as long as the temperature and loading plan suit the stock. Flowers need careful handling and should not be packed too tightly.
