Submersible Pump

When a trench fills with rain water or a pit starts backing up, a submersible pump gets the job moving again. Coastline Hire supplies electric submersible pumps for sites and flood water work across East London and the Eastern Cape coast.

What A Submersible Pump Does On Site

A submersible pump sits in the water and pushes it out through a discharge hose. It is used where you need fast removal from pits, excavations, basements, service holes and flooded areas. Because the pump works below the waterline, it can handle jobs where a surface pump would struggle to draw suction.

For builders, this is useful after heavy rain, during groundwork, and when you need a trench dry before shuttering or pipe laying. For property owners and event teams, it helps with storm water, cellar flooding and standing water around access roads. On the coast, where moisture and sudden downpours are common, a pump can save hours of waiting and clean-up.

Pump Sizes And Options We Supply

We supply electric submersible pumps in practical site sizes, from light duty units for small water problems to heavier units for deeper pits and higher flow work. The right choice depends on how much water must move, how far it must travel and whether the water carries silt, leaves or small grit.

  • Light duty pumps for puddles, shallow pits and minor seepage
  • Medium duty pumps for trenches, footings and general building dewatering
  • Higher flow pumps for flooded areas and larger holding pits
  • With or without float control, depending on whether you want auto start and stop
  • Hose sizes matched to the pump and the job, usually 25 mm to 75 mm

If you are not sure which unit will suit, we can match the pump to the depth, water volume and site access before dispatch.

Where This Pump Suits Best

These pumps are commonly used on building sites in Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach and around East London when trenches collect water after rain. They also suit farms, yards, stormwater pits, lift shafts, plant rooms and event sites where water has pooled where it should not be.

For coastal work near Port Alfred and along the Eastern Cape coast, the pump is handy where groundwater keeps returning or sea air and damp conditions slow site work. It is also useful for emergency callouts when a flooded area needs to be cleared quickly and safely.

  • Excavations and trenches
  • Pump pits and drainage sumps
  • Flooded garages, basements and service rooms
  • Temporary water removal for events and functions

Installation, Power And Hose Setup

Most submersible pumps need a stable electrical supply, and the exact power draw depends on the model selected. For site use, we check that the supply is suitable and that the cable run is safe and protected from damage. Where there is load-shedding or unreliable power, it is worth planning the pump work around backup supply or a suitable generator.

The pump is lowered into the water, not placed on dry ground. It must sit on a firm base if the water has mud or grit, so it does not suck in heavy sediment. The discharge hose should be as short and straight as practical, with kinks removed and the outlet placed where water will not run back into the work area. A small slip in hose routing can cause a big loss in flow.

  • Confirm the power supply and plug type before hire
  • Check discharge distance and outlet position
  • Allow enough hose for the full route to drain point
  • Ask for setup help if the pit is deep or access is awkward

Care, Servicing And Safe Use

Submersible pumps need basic care if they are going to work properly through a wet week on site. The intake should be kept clear of stones, rags and heavy mud. After use, the pump should be rinsed and checked for cable wear, blocked strainers and damage to the hose fittings. If the water is dirty, more frequent cleaning is needed.

Our workshop team checks units before hire and after return, so each pump is ready for the next job. If you are running the pump for long periods, keep an eye on heat, flow and unusual noise. A pump that starts to labour may need the intake cleared or the lift height reduced. If the water contains sand or slurry, tell us upfront so we can advise on the better option.

What To Check Before You Order

Before you place an order, it helps to have a few details ready. This makes it easier to send the right pump first time and avoid delays on site. If you are in East London, Qonce or Port Alfred, we can arrange delivery, collection, weekend hire or emergency callout where needed.

  • Depth of the water and approximate volume
  • Whether the water is clean, muddy or carries grit
  • How far the water must be pumped away
  • Available power supply on site
  • Whether you need hoses, setup help or pre-hire briefing
  • How long you will need the pump, one day or longer term

If you are unsure, send a quick note to hire@coastlinehire.co.za with the site location and a short description of the problem. We can then advise on the best pump and arrange delivery from Beacon Bay to the coast.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can a submersible pump handle muddy water?

Some units can handle dirty water and light grit, but heavy slurry or stones can block the intake. Tell us what the water contains and we will match the pump to it.

Do I need power on site for this pump?

Yes, most submersible pumps run on electricity. If site power is not reliable, we can talk through generator support or another setup that suits the job.

Can you help if the pit floods after rain?

Yes. We do emergency callout, site delivery and setup across East London, Beacon Bay, Gonubie, Kidds Beach, Qonce and Port Alfred.
